Satya Bhattacharya has performed over 2800 gall bladder removals (cholecystectomies). Apart from gallstone surgery, he carries out operations on the liver, the pancreas and the bile duct, by the keyhole and open methods. He also performs general surgery, such as repair of hernias.

Satya looks after his private patients at the London Clinic and the King Edward VII Hospital. He worked as a Consultant Surgeon at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals in London for 22 years (1999 to 2020). He set up and led the specialist service for liver and pancreas surgery in North-East London. He chairs the multi-disciplinary team meetings for liver and pancreas cancer (HPB MDT) in the London Clinic. He served as the Serjeant Surgeon to Her Majesty The Queen (2016-23) and prior to that was the Surgeon to the Royal Household (2006-16). He was Medical Director of The London Clinic for 5 years (2017-22).

In addition to his clinical work, he is engaged in research as an Honorary Reader at the Barts Cancer Institute. He has over 75 publications in surgical journals and has served as a referee (peer reviewer) for 4 international surgical journals. He is active in postgraduate teaching and is an examiner for the FRCS examination in General Surgery. He has raised over £1 million for research into pancreatic and liver disease in the past years. This has been utilised in running several research projects at Barts and at the London Clinic.

Satya grew up in Mumbai, India, and qualified as a doctor from the Grant Medical College. He trained in specialist surgery of the liver and pancreas (HPB Surgery) at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals, London. He was a visiting Fellow at the University of Minnesota with a grant received from the King's Fund.

Satya was listed in the Tatler Doctors Guide as one of Britain's "250 best consultants". He has published two books of poems.

Hemant Kocher is Professor of Liver and Pancreas Surgery at the world-leading cancer research organisation: Barts Cancer Institute at Queen Mary University of London. He is also Consultant Surgeon at The Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals, part of Barts Health NHS Trust: the largest hospital group in the UK. Professor Kocher specialises in the treatment of diseases of the liver, gall bladder, bile duct, pancreas and spleen. He also performs hernia surgery and is expert laparoscopic (key-hole) surgeon for operations on the abdomen (tummy). Professor Kocher has trained in Bombay, India as well as United Kingdom and held visiting posts in Europe, Africa, Asia and the USA. He holds a number of prestigious appointments on national and international committees.

Apart from working as a doctor, Professor Kocher leads a multi-disciplinary laboratory team pioneering cancer research leading to discovery of novel biomarkers for diagnosing and predicting cancer patterns as well as therapeutic areas which are being explored in human clinical trials. Hemant also leads national bio-banking efforts which along with state-of-the-art health-informatics and bio-informatics. Hemant hopes to change our understanding of disease processes particularly cancers he treats.

Professor Kocher has trained over forty surgeons who are leaders in field in number of countries. He has also supervised over 35 research degrees for scientists and doctors. A number of his previous clinical and non-clinical post-graduate students lead laboratories or medical technology companies.

Mr Deepak Hariharan is a Consultant General and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgeon at The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, which is one of the largest NHS health care trusts in the country. His private practice is based at The London Clinic, The Princess Grace Hospital and Harley Street Clinic in London.

He specialises in treating all benign and malignant conditions affecting the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas along with common general surgical conditions presenting electively or as an emergency.


His clinical research interest has been to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment in HPB cancers. He investigated potential diagnostic biomarkers in urine for pancreatic cancer. His seminal paper established urinary proteomics as a strategy for investigation of biomarkers for pancreas cancer.

In September 2019, Pancreas Cancer Research Fund, funded a £1.6M clinical study that would validate the accuracy and reliability of a urine test in detecting pancreatic cancer at an early stage and help establish the Barts Pancreas Tissue Bank of the largest repositories for pancreas cancer research.

He has multiple peer-reviewed publications in HPB and General Surgery and is a tutor and mentor to undergraduate, post-graduate trainees and nurses.

He is driven by quality improvement in surgery and is instrumental in setting up the Hot Cholecystectomy Pathway. This facilitates immediate/early gallbladder surgery for suitable cases presenting as an emergency with symptomatic gallstones. He helped establish enhanced recovery programme after HPB cancer surgery to advance postoperative care.

He is motivated and focused on developing high performing surgical teams to improve quality of surgical care and enhance patient experience.

Ajit ABRAHAM, whose family hails from Kerala, India, was born in Kumasi, Ghana, schooled in Manchester, and trained as a general surgeon in Pune, India.
He returned to the UK in 1993 and trained further in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery and liver transplantation in London, mainly at the Royal Free and the Royal London Hospitals.

He has been Consultant General, Trauma & HPB Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS since 2005.
He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University London and the Barts Health Trust Undergraduate Dean.
He is also the Barts Health Group Executive Director for Inclusion & Equity.

He is an active clinical surgeon whose specialist HPB interests include surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the liver, gall bladder and bile duct, and pancreas, complex gallstone disease, and acute and chronic pancreatitis; and related open, laparoscopic and robotic surgical approaches.
He also has over two decades of expertise in elective and emergency general surgery and the management of major chest, abdomen and pelvic trauma at the Royal London, the first dedicated major trauma centre in the UK.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals in HPB & general surgery, contributed to chapters in major medical and surgical textbooks, and taught and trained at all levels, including the MBBS, MRCS and FRCS.

His other areas of interest are clinical leadership, quality improvement, patient safety, and inclusion and equity. He has made substantive contributions to patient safety at Barts Health, to the Barts Health Surgical Strategy and its implementation, the WeImprove QI strategy, the WeLead leadership programme, and the WeBelong strategy for inclusion and equity.

He was Health Foundation QI Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and Harvard from 2011-12, and he has an MA in Medical Ethics & Law from Keele University, UK, 2004.

At Barts Health, he was the Clinical Director for Surgery 2010-11, Associate Medical Director for Improvement, Innovation, 2013-14, Executive Group Director for the Surgery & Cancer Clinical Academic Group, 2014-2016. Chair of the Boards of Surgery & Cancer 2016-18, and Barts Health Deputy Chief Medical Officer 2016 -18.

On a surgical sabbatical in 2018-19, he re-established and led the HPB surgical service at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore,
